The Interlock is a new build five-storey mixed-use development designed to echo the proportions of the adjoining buildings, whilst challenging their traditional facades with matt blue clay bricks. Behind the façade, comprises three residential units, a ground floor cafe and subterranean gallery space for hosting exhibitions, workshops and talks.
Prior to construction, the facade was modelled extensively to ensure the desired arrangement could be attained structurally. 5,000 Staffordshire blue bricks were set into 14 hand-crafted steel moulds and fired in oxidation to create 44 bespoke brick designs. A one-to-one template was then used on site to set out the location of each brick during construction. At the rear, the building is set out as a series of stacked boxes of varying form and size. Each floor is shallower than the last with the deepest floorplan at the bottom and the smallest at the top. Within this stepped form sits a series of deep light wells and skylights that track daylight into the centre and edges of the building, creating internal patios on the lowest floors and light wells on others. We provided all mechanical, electrical and drainage services for the project.
