Kenwood Lee is a new family home in a conservation area. The house uses a subtle palette of materials; concrete twinned with brick, FSC timber, steel and glass. Internal spaces are anchored around a board-marked concrete core, which forms a triple-height atrium.
Consideration was given to the orientation of the house; the location and placement of glazing and solar shading in order to maximise natural light and minimise glare. The rear glazed elevation benefits from solar gain during the winter months and natural stack ventilation in the central open core and louvered screens help reduce the adverse effects of solar gain during the summer months.
The building includes improved passive measures of thermal performance to the building’s fabric; including higher levels of insulation, lower air permeability and an accompanying ventilation heat recovery system to ensure the building is supplied with fresh air without avoidable loss of heat. The house includes a large landscaped rear garden and rainwater harvesting to help reduce CO2 emissions.
